Kolkata, 19th July 2024: Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, Hon’ble Minister of State for Education and Development of Northeast said that Government of India is eyeing for half a million (5 Lakhs) foreign students to study in India by 2047. He was addressing an august gathering today at Kolkata assembled for the 8th Edition of ASSOCHAM Edumeet & Education Excellence Award.

This vibrant annual event united educationists, business leaders, experts, influencers, and social impact investors to explore the integration of technological advancements with human emotional and social skills. In line with the principles of Education 5.0, EduMeet 2024 aimed to reinforce India’s position as a global education hub.

Over the past few decades, digital transformation has revolutionized various sectors, including education. With the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, digital integration in education accelerated significantly, paving the way for online classes and distance learning. The global education market, valued at USD 6639.48 million in 2022, is projected to grow at a CAGR of 6.34%, reaching USD 9600.79 million by 2028. In India, the education market is expected to reach US$ 225 billion by FY25, with FDI equity inflows in the education sector standing at US$ 9.44 billion from April 2000 to September 2023. Indian edtech startups have also attracted investments totaling US$ 3.94 billion across 155 deals in FY22, highlighting the sector’s dynamic growth potential.

Dr Majumdar further added, “Viksit Bharat is a dream shared by billions of Indians, envisioning advancements in health, education, and other services. Achieving this vision requires a strong partnership between the government and industry. Our ministry is committed to enhancing infrastructure and accessibility to bridge the digital divide and improve education in remote and marginalized communities. Currently, over 93 higher educational institutions offer 1,369 ODL programs, and 66 institutions provide 371 online programs, benefitting more than 2.1 million students. To promote multidisciplinary education and flexibility, over 300 universities have adopted the Swayam platform, allowing learners to earn up to 40% of their credits online. With 43 million enrollments, Swayam is one of the most popular e-learning platforms today. Additionally, over 3,000 higher educational institutions use the Samarth platform across 32 states. The government has also introduced unique identification numbers for students, enabling them to track and store their academic achievements.”

India’s demographic advantage, with 580 million people in the age bracket of 5-24 years, presents a significant opportunity for the education sector. However, preparing this population for the future requires more than just technological tools. It necessitates a balance between technological proficiency and human-centric skills, aligning with the vision of Industry 5.0 and Education 5.0.

Collectively we can promise that we are committed to the “Viksit Bharat’ and we shall work together to see that the best is being offered to the students here that way India will become a global hub and encourage students from all over the world to come and acquire knowledge, something that was there in the ancient India as well. “

His Excellency, Ambassador of the United States of America to India, Mr Eric Garcetti said, “I’m excited to discuss the U.S.-India relationship and our shared education goals. When India and the U.S. collaborate, it’s a powerful partnership, exemplified by leadership at the G-20 and joint efforts in women’s empowerment, financial reform, and global peace, grounded in non-violence. A key topic is how emerging technologies can either harm or connect us. India and the U.S. are working together on AI to improve food security and affordable telecommunications. India’s innovations, from UPI to digital infrastructure, serve as a global model. Our collaboration spans space, biotech, and energy tech, with prosperity as our ultimate goal. Climate change is an urgent challenge, affecting 800 million Indians. We should work hand in hand to protect this planet. American innovation, such as the new malaria vaccine developed with Oxford University, comes to fruition in India, where the scale and expertise exist to manufacture it. This collaboration between India and the U.S. showcases how we can jointly benefit the world. By working together and sharing our practical knowledge, we can assist other countries. We move forward together not only because it’s the right thing to do but also because we value our partnership.”
